Men's silver and gold necklaces
Silver or gold comes first: cool or warm. Every design here is made in solid sterling silver; many can be made to order in gold, which takes approximately four weeks, or four to six weeks with stones.
Sterling silver
Every necklace here comes in solid sterling silver, which goes with everything. It darkens a little over time; a silver cloth brings it back.
Men's silver jewelry9ct gold
Warmer: many designs can be made in 9ct yellow gold, and some in 9ct rose gold. The Signet Necklace, Silk Disc and Carved Skull list 9ct as a standard option.
Men's gold jewelry18ct gold
A richer, deeper color and more weight in the hand. The Cross, the Silk Disc and the London Oak necklaces can be made in 18ct yellow gold.
Men's gold jewelryWhite gold and platinum
Cool, pale metal: the Cross can be made in 18ct white gold, and the London Oak River Signet in 18ct white gold with a yellow gold river. For platinum, ask us.

Solid metal
Solid, and hallmarked to prove it
Every necklace here is solid sterling silver or solid gold, made by hand in our own workshop at 210 Upper Street, Islington. Most jewelers have pieces made overseas; we make ours here.
Many men's chains sold today are gold-plated silver or plated base metal, and in a photograph they look the same. So how do you tell? The hallmark. In the UK, silver over 7.78g, gold over 1g and platinum over 0.5g must be tested and marked by an Assay Office before it can be sold as that metal. Every precious metal piece we make is assayed and hallmarked.
A chain on its own, or with a pendant?
Decide this before the length and the width, because a pendant changes both. Most of the necklaces men buy from us carry one - a cross, a signet, a tag.
A chain on its own
Worn at 50 or 55cm, over a T-shirt or under an open collar. Choose it by length and by weight.
Men's chains
A chain with a pendant
The pendant carries the meaning; the chain carries the pendant. Wear it a little longer so the pendant hangs below the collarbone.
Men's pendant necklaces
A pendant on leather
Woven brown or black leather with a solid silver or gold pendant. Lighter and quieter than a chain, and easy with denim.

Men's chains
Solid silver chains made by hand in our workshop: simple, weighty, and happy on their own. Both come in two lengths.
Lengths: medium 44cm (about 17in) and large 52cm (about 20.5in)

Heavy Link Necklace

Length guide
What length chain should a man wear?
Length is the question men ask us most, and the answer depends on whether there is a pendant, and a little on your build. Measurements are the total length of the chain, clasp to clasp.
The short answer
50cm (20in) for a chain on its own: it sits just below the collarbone on most men and is the safe length for a gift. 55cm (22in) is the other length most men wear. With a pendant, 55 to 60cm (22 to 24in).
Where each length sits
45cm (18in): at the base of the neck, on the collarbone. Short on most men.
50cm (20in): just below the collarbone. The everyday length.
55cm (22in): a little lower; clears an open collar.
60cm (24in): on the upper chest. For a pendant you want seen.
80cm (31in): long, worn over clothes.
18 or 20, 20 or 22, 22 or 24 inches
Each step is 5cm (2in) of chain, which lowers the front by roughly half that, about 2.5cm, because the extra length is shared between front and back. If a chain sits too high, one step is usually enough.
Your build, and a pendant
The same chain sits higher on a broad neck. If you have a broad neck or are over six foot, go one step longer. A pendant pulls the chain into a soft V and needs room to hang below the collarbone.

Measure, and if it is wrong
Lay a chain you already love flat and measure it end to end, or put a piece of string round your neck where you want the chain to sit. If the length is wrong, contact us. Pieces that are not a Custom Option can be exchanged for another size within their size range; our Guarantee page has the full terms.
Our GuaranteeHow thick should a men's chain be?
Width is measured across one link, in millimetres. It changes how a chain looks - quiet or bold - not where it sits. As a general guide, most men wear 2 to 4mm at 50 or 55cm; under 2mm reads as a fine line, and over 4mm is a statement.
Fine
A fine chain lets a small pendant speak for itself. Our Signet Necklace hangs on a fine chain and the Block Necklace on a slim one.
Heavy
Weight you can feel. The Link and Heavy Link are solid silver chains to wear on their own over a shirt or T-shirt, or layered with a finer chain.
Strong enough for the pendant
A pendant pulls on the chain and the clasp all day, and a heavier pendant needs a heavier chain. Every pendant necklace here comes with its chain, so the pairing is done for you.
Curb, belcher or trace?
Most chains are one of a few link patterns, and these are the three people compare most. The names describe the shape of the links, not the metal or the quality.
Trace
Round or oval links of the same size joined in a plain line. Light and simple: the usual chain under a small pendant.
Belcher
A trace chain with wider, rounder, heavier links. More presence than a trace of the same length.
Curb
Links twisted so they lie flat against the skin. Smooth under a shirt, the most common men's chain, and a strong one to hang a pendant from.
Our Link and Heavy Link
Our own design: smooth, rounded, squarish links made by hand in our workshop. The Link is the lighter of the two, the Heavy Link the bolder.
Link Necklace from $1,100 Heavy Link Necklace from $1,650 Men's chainsWhat men's pendants mean
Men often choose a pendant for what it stands for as much as how it looks. These are the ones we make, and what each is usually taken to mean.
Cross
Faith for some; for others the shape alone. Ours has slightly curved edges and can be engraved on the front or the back.
Skull
Memento mori: remember that you will die, so live now - and live well. Worn as a reminder, not as a threat.
Skull necklaces
Arrowhead
One of the oldest tools people made: aim, direction and protection. Ours nods to the arrowheads used millennia ago.
Signet
A signet carried a family seal or initials. As a pendant it is worn at the neck rather than on the hand, and takes initials, a crest or a stone.
Signet jewelry
Dog tag and locket
An identity tag, and a hidden place for words. The Enamel Mosaic and London Oak Mosaic swing open to a surface for engraving only you know is there.
London Oak
A piece of London to wear: oak about 2,000 years old from the Roman port on the Thames, set in solid silver or gold.
London Oak
Engraving
Engraved men's necklaces
Most of our pendants can be engraved by hand in our workshop: the Block on the front, side or back; the Cross and the Soho Tag on the front or back; the Liquid with a date, a name or a blood group. The Enamel Mosaic, London Oak Mosaic and London Oak Saint James open to a hidden surface for words only the wearer sees.

What length chain should a man wear?
50cm (20in) is the everyday length: it sits just below the collarbone on most men and is the safe choice for a gift. 55cm (22in) is the other common length and clears an open collar. If you have a broad neck or are over six foot, go one step longer. Our Link and Heavy Link come in 44cm and 52cm.
What length chain should I wear with a pendant?
55 to 60cm (22 to 24in), so the pendant hangs below the collarbone rather than resting on it. A larger pendant looks better lower, where it has room to hang. A small pendant can sit higher: our Signet Necklace adjusts to 45cm or 50cm.
How thick should a men's chain be?
Most men wear 2 to 4mm at 50 or 55cm. Under 2mm reads as a fine line and suits a small pendant; over 4mm is a statement. Width changes how a chain looks, not where it sits.
What is the strongest chain for a pendant?
One with solid, closed links and a secure clasp, heavy enough for the pendant it carries. Curb links, which lie flat, wear well under a pendant. Our pendant necklaces come with their chains, so the pairing is done for you.
How can I tell if a chain is solid silver or gold, or plated?
Look for the hallmark. In the UK, silver over 7.78g, gold over 1g and platinum over 0.5g must be hallmarked by an Assay Office before it is sold as that metal, and plating cannot carry a precious metal hallmark. Every precious metal piece we make is assayed and hallmarked.
Can men layer necklaces?
Yes, and it is an easy way to make a plain chain your own. Keep two chains about 5cm apart, for example 50cm with 55cm, and wear the plain chain shorter than the pendant so they do not tangle. Our Link Necklace looks as good on its own as it does with finer chains.
Can you shower with a silver chain, and does it tarnish?
Sterling silver darkens over time because of sulphur in the air, and faster when it is not worn; a silver cloth brings it back. Water does not harm solid silver, but soap, chlorine and salt water dull it, so take it off to swim. Take leather necklaces off to shower, as water dries and weakens leather.
What does a St Christopher necklace mean?
St Christopher is the patron saint of travellers, and the medal is worn for a safe journey. We do not list one, but ask us about having one made, or choose a pendant to engrave with a line for the road, such as the Soho Tag.
