Skull Rings for Men and Women
Skull rings made by hand in our own workshop at 210 Upper Street, Islington, where we have made skull jewelry since we opened in 1995. Most jewelers have pieces made overseas; we make ours here, in solid silver and gold, with stones in the eyes if you want them. Classic, gothic, enduring: a skull ring is a memento mori, a reminder that life is short, so live it well. Start with who the ring is for, or with the question you came with.

Meaning
What does a skull ring mean?
A skull ring is a memento mori: a reminder that life is short, so live it well. The idea is centuries old. English gold rings of the 1600s carried enamelled skulls and words such as "Memento Mori", and from the 17th to the 19th century people left money in their wills for rings to be made for friends and family; Shakespeare did. In the 1970s London jewelers made silver skull rings for musicians, and Keith Richards has worn his, made in London in 1978, as a reminder of mortality. A skull ring is not bad luck, and it does not belong to any one group. Most people who wear one simply wear it for themselves.
Skull engagement rings and skull wedding rings
A skull on the wedding finger? It is not new: the memento mori rings of the 1600s were gold bands with a skull on the bezel. We make skull engagement and wedding rings for women and men, as one ring or as a pair.
Skull engagement rings
The Catacomb carries a moissanite or black sapphire on top, with diamonds or black diamonds in the eyes as an option. The Mini Skull and Bones can have diamond eyes.
Skull wedding and engagement rings
A skull as the wedding ring
A small skull is easy to wear every day. The Mini Skull and the Mini Skull and Bones are made in 18ct yellow, white and rose gold and in platinum, as well as silver and 9ct gold.
His and hers, or theirs
A pair in the same metal: a Mini Skull for one of you and the full-size Skull for the other - matching, but not identical.
Engraved, or made to your design
We engrave inside the band by hand in our workshop: a date, initials, a line of your own, worn against the skin. If none of these is the ring, we will design one with you.
Skull ring styles
Every skull we make was sculpted in our workshop. They fall into six families: which is yours?
Anatomical
Sculpted by Stephen to be anatomically correct: the Skull, the Mini Skull and the Large Skull.
Carved and modern
Flatter planes and sharper lines. The Eternal Skull suits a suit or a T-shirt.
Smiling
Our rock and roll skull, grinning away, made in our workshop for more than 25 years.
Skull and crossbones
A small skull and bones to stack, or the Catacomb: twenty-eight skulls and bones around the band.
Crowned and decorated
A crown of small skulls, oak leaves and acorns, or a tattoo pattern made with Joshua Kane.
Skull signet
A skull under black, royal blue or deep red enamel, on a signet ring. Heraldry, darkly.
Signet ringsSmall, full size or heavy: our skull rings by size and price
Our skull rings run from a skull small enough to stack to one that covers the finger and makes itself known. The prices below are for solid sterling silver. The same designs in gold, or with stones in the eyes, cost more; each ring's page gives the price for every metal and stone. If the weight of a ring matters to you, ask us before you order.
Worn alone, on the little finger, or stacked with other rings.
Our classic size, at home on any finger.
The Large Skull is about 30 by 21mm across the face and stands about 11mm off the finger.
An enamelled skull signet, or the Catacomb with a stone on top.
Silver or gold skull ring?
Our skull rings are solid sterling silver or solid gold, and every precious metal piece we make is assayed and hallmarked. Many fashion-brand skull rings are brass with a silver-colored finish, or silver plated with gold: brass cannot be hallmarked, and a plated ring is hallmarked only as the metal underneath.
Sterling silver
Where every design starts. Silver darkens with time, most in the recesses of a skull, which gives the face depth and character; a polish brings the high points back.
9ct gold
Yellow or rose on most designs, white on some. 9ct is 37.5% gold and costs less than 18ct.
18ct gold and platinum
The Mini Skull and the Mini Skull and Bones are made in 18ct yellow, white and rose gold and in platinum; the Skull Men's Ring in platinum.
Vermeil and titanium
The Skull Tattoo and Sacred Oak rings also come in 18ct gold vermeil, 18ct gold over sterling silver. The Skull Ring can be made in titanium.
Skull rings with stone eyes
Most of our skulls can have a stone set in each eye; on the Large Skull they are 5mm round brilliant-cut stones. We set them in our workshop. Stone eyes are a Custom Option, made for your ring, and the price for each stone is on the ring's page. Rings with stone eyes take four to six weeks to make.
Black sapphires
The quietest choice: the eyes stay dark but catch the light.
Rubies
Red eyes: wicked, and the color asked for most.
Diamonds
White sparkle, and the usual choice for a skull engagement ring.
Green tsavorites
A bright, unexpected green garnet.
Blue sapphires
Deep, inky blue.
Amethyst and moissanite
Purple amethyst eyes on the Large Carved Skull; a moissanite or black sapphire on top of the Catacomb.
Which finger do you wear a skull ring on?
Any finger. The size of the skull usually decides it. Fingers on the same hand are different sizes, so measure the one you will wear it on.
Middle or index finger
Where a large skull sits best: the Large Skull, the Large Carved Skull or the Catacomb.
Little finger
For a Mini Skull or Mini Skull and Bones, alone or stacked.
Ring finger
For a skull engagement or wedding ring. In the UK, the fourth finger of the left hand.

What does a skull ring mean?
It is a memento mori, a reminder to live well because life is short. Skull rings were made in England in the 1600s as mourning and memento mori rings. Today most people wear one for themselves. More in our guide to skull rings.
Is it bad luck to wear a skull ring?
No. Its oldest meaning is the opposite of a curse: a reminder to make the most of your life, and to live it well.
Which finger do you wear a skull ring on?
Any finger. Large skulls sit best on the middle or index finger, small ones on the little finger or stacked, and a skull wedding or engagement ring on the fourth finger of the left hand. Measure the finger you will wear it on.
Are your skull rings solid silver?
Yes. Our skull rings are solid sterling silver or solid gold, made in our workshop in Islington, and every precious metal piece is assayed and hallmarked. Two designs, the Skull Tattoo and Sacred Oak rings, are also made in 18ct gold vermeil: 18ct gold over sterling silver.
Can I have stones in the eyes of a skull ring?
On most designs, yes: black sapphires, rubies, diamonds, green tsavorites or blue sapphires, depending on the ring. Choose them on the ring's page, where the price is shown. Rings with stone eyes take four to six weeks to make.
Can a skull ring be an engagement or wedding ring?
Yes. The Catacomb Skull and Bones Ring carries a moissanite or black sapphire on top, and the Mini Skull rings come in 18ct gold and platinum. We can make a pair, engrave inside the band, or design a ring with you. See skull wedding and engagement rings.
How heavy is a skull ring?
It depends on the design and the size. Our range runs from the Mini Skull, small enough to stack, to the Large Skull, about 30 by 21mm across the face. A ring in silver is lighter than the same ring in gold. Does weight matter to you? Ask us before you order.
How long does a skull ring take to make?
Approximately four weeks from order, and four to six weeks with stone eyes. Some rings are in stock and leave sooner. UK shipping is free on orders over about $135 and we post internationally.
