Engraved signet rings: initials, a family crest or a seal

Nearly half of the signets ordered on this site are engraved. A plain face is made for it: initials on the top, a date or a motto inside the band, a family crest, or a seal cut in reverse for wax.

Silver Signet Ring

Our recommendation

Silver Signet Ring

At 18 x 15mm (from size P) it is the largest face we make, which is what three initials, a crest or a reversed seal need. Have it engraved on the face, inside the band, or both. Made in silver or 9ct gold.

Signet ring with a stone: onyx, lapis and London Oak

Each stone is cut by hand, so no two faces are the same. London Oak is 2,000-year-old oak recovered from the Thames. Stone and London Oak faces may not be resizable, so check your size before you order.

“I have bought several pieces from the men's collection for my husband's birthdays: an arrowhead necklace, an arrowhead bracelet and more recently a lapis lazuli signet ring. My very difficult to buy for husband has loved every single piece, wears them daily and is often complimented.”

Face size by finger

Which finger does a signet ring go on?

The British convention is the little finger of the hand you do not write with. Any finger is fine: a signet is yours. What matters is that the face suits the finger, so here is every face we make, smallest first, measured across the top. Size the ring for the finger you choose.

Which hand does a signet ring go on?

By tradition the hand you do not write with, so the left for most people. If that hand already has a wedding ring, the right little finger is the usual choice.

Which way should a signet ring face?

Most people wear it with the design facing outwards, so it reads the right way up to the person opposite.

Signet ring and wedding ring on the same hand

They can share a hand: the signet on the little finger, the wedding ring beside it. If the two feel crowded, move the signet to the other hand.

The history of the signet ring

How should a signet ring fit?

It should slide over the knuckle with a little resistance and then sit still, with the face on top.

Size on a wide band

A signet sits wider than a plain ring, and a wide band fits tighter at the same size. Measure a ring of a similar width, or visit the shop and we will measure you.

Ring size guide

A different finger is a different size

The same finger can be two sizes apart from one hand to the other. Size the exact finger you will wear it on, at the end of the day when your hands are warm.

If the size is wrong

If the size is wrong, contact us. Pieces that are not a Custom Option can be exchanged for another size within their size range; our Guarantee page has the full terms. Stone and London Oak faces may not be resizable.

Gold or silver signet ring?

Each product page lists the metals that design is made in, and the price changes with the metal you choose.

Platinum

The heaviest and most durable. Made to order, and not offered on every design.

How much does a signet ring cost?

What moves the price: the metal and its weight, the size of the face, a stone or enamel, and engraving. The prices shown are the lowest for each design.

Silver

A plain face in sterling silver.

Stone and enamel

A hand-cut stone or enamel face, in silver.

Gold

Our signets are also made in gold. The price on the product page updates when you choose the metal.

What does a signet ring mean?

A signet ring was a signature. Egyptian, Greek and Roman officials pressed them into clay and wax to seal and authenticate documents, and in medieval Europe the family crest moved onto the face. Today it carries whatever mark you choose: initials, a date, or a crest you invent. Worn by:

Your own design

Bespoke signet rings

If none of these is quite it, we make one from the start: your own shape, stone, crest or seal. It begins with a consultation in the shop on Upper Street or on Zoom. We draw the design, often in 3D, and refine it with you before anything is made. We also design family crests for people who do not have one.

Signet ring questions

Which hand does a signet ring go on?

By tradition, the hand you do not write with, so the left for most people. There is no rule beyond that. If your left hand already carries a wedding ring, the little finger of the right hand is the usual choice.

Which way should a signet ring face?

Most people wear it with the design facing outwards, so it reads the right way up to the person opposite. If you are unsure, ask us when you order.

Can a woman wear a signet ring?

Yes, and women always have. Every signet we make can be worn by anyone. The Small Signet (10 x 10mm face), the Small Oval and the Slim suit smaller fingers. See our women's signet rings.

Can you wear a signet ring with a wedding ring?

Yes. Most people wear the signet on the little finger and the wedding ring beside it on the ring finger. If the two feel crowded, wear the signet on the other hand.

Can a signet ring be resized?

A plain metal signet can usually be resized in our workshop; rings with a stone or London Oak face may not be. If the size is wrong, contact us. Pieces that are not a Custom Option can be exchanged for another size within their size range; our Guarantee page has the full terms. Ask us about resizing after that.

What is usually on a signet ring?

Initials, a family crest or coat of arms, or a seal cut in reverse so it prints the right way round in wax. Some people choose a stone or enamel face instead, and many wear the face plain. Inside the band, a date or a motto. Initials are priced when you add engraving on the product page; crests and seals are quoted individually.

How long does a signet ring take to make?

If your size and metal are in stock, it leaves within three business days. If not, we make it for you in our workshop, which takes about four weeks. Engraving can add time. If you need it by a date, call us on +44 20 7359 4977 before you order.

What age do you get a signet ring?

There is no set age. A signet is often given for an 18th or 21st birthday, and many people buy their own later. If it marks a birthday, have the date engraved inside the band. For gift ideas, see our jewelry gifts for him.
