The kind we sell most

Plain band rings for men

A plain band is the ring men buy most from us, as a wedding ring or as the one ring they wear every day. We make three ranges, each in several widths: Liquid, with a soft rippled profile; Ellipse, a plain rounded band; and Beaten, with a hammered surface. The question a band raises is width, and the answer is just below.

The one we'd choose

Liquid Ring

The plain band men buy most from us, from the Liquid range we have made since 1995. At 9mm it has presence on the hand and still sits comfortably beside a watch or another ring. Because it is wide, size it on a ring of similar width, or come in and we will measure you.

How wide should a men's ring be?

There is no right width, only the one that suits your hand, and the bands we sell are spread evenly across the range. Our Liquid bands come in 4, 6, 9 and 13mm, Ellipse in 3, 4, 5 and 6mm, and Beaten in 9 and 13mm. The wider the band, the tighter it fits.

3 to 4mm

Fine. Sits beside another ring, or under a watch, without competing.

5 to 6mm

The middle of the range, and the usual width for a wedding band.

9mm

Wide. A ring with presence; size it on a wide ring.

13mm

Our widest bands. Worn on their own, or on the thumb.

Most often engraved

Signet rings for men

Men usually wear a signet on the little finger of the hand they don't write with, and more than a third of the signets we sell are engraved: initials on the face, a crest, or a date inside the band. Five to start with; the full guide has the rest.

The one we'd choose

Signet Ring

Our classic signet. From size P upwards the face is about 16 by 16mm, room for two or three initials or a crest, and it is made to order in silver, gold or platinum. Ask us about a crest or seal.

Memento mori

Skull rings for men

Men wear a skull ring as a memento mori, a reminder that life is short, and we have been making ours for more than 25 years. They are solid and weighty, and on most the eyes can be set with stones.

The one we'd choose

Skull Ring

The original. Sculpted by Stephen to be anatomically correct, smooth and solid, about 20 by 16mm and 7.5mm high off the finger. Made to order in silver or gold, with the eyes left plain or set with stones.

For the ring people notice

Statement rings for men

Sculpted, heavy rings that are the point rather than a detail. Several began as film or commission pieces. A heavy ring usually sits best on the middle finger; size a wide one on a ring of similar width.

Budget
Vine Ring, made in our London workshop

The one we'd choose

Vine Ring

The most bought of our statement rings. Vines loop and curl round the finger, from a design we made for the film Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. At 5mm wide it is the one statement ring that also works as a wedding ring.

Color

Men's rings with stones and enamel

Enamel, hand-cut stone, a line of gold or 2,000-year-old London oak, set into a solid band. The rings to choose if a plain band feels too plain.

Budget
Enamel Geo Ring, made in our London workshop

The one we'd choose

Enamel Geo Ring

Our most bought men's ring. A 2mm line of enamel runs round the center of a 6mm band, in the color you choose, royal blue and burgundy among them, and the band can be silver, titanium, gold or platinum.

Made to order

Custom men's rings

Many of our rings are made to order in the size and metal you choose from the options on each ring's page, and some ranges come in several widths. We are one of the few jewelers still designing and making everything in its own workshop, in Islington, on Upper Street, so your ring is designed and made under one roof. Making takes approximately four weeks.

Engraved men's rings

We engrave in our workshop: a date or a line inside a band, or initials on the face of a signet. Add engraving from the menu on the ring's page, where the price is shown; crests are quoted individually.

Engraved rings can't be returned, so if you are unsure of your size, order the ring plain and have it engraved once it fits.

Men's ring size

When a men's ring needs changing, the reason is almost always size, and the usual cause is width. Four things to know before you order.

What is the average men's ring size in the UK?

S. Half the men's rings we make are between O and V, and about one in ten is Y or larger. If you need a size outside the range shown on a ring's page, call us.

How to measure your ring size at home

Take a ring that fits the finger you want to wear the new one on, ideally of a similar width, and check it against the chart in our size guide. Measure at the end of the day, when fingers are largest.

Ring size guide

Does ring width change the size?

Yes. A wide band fits tighter than a narrow one in the same size. If you are buying a wide ring and measured with a thin one, come in and try the width, or call us before you order.

If the size is wrong

If the size is wrong, contact us. Pieces that are not a Custom Option can be exchanged for another size within their size range; our Guarantee page has the full terms. Ask us about resizing.

Which finger should a man wear a ring on?

Any finger works. These are the conventions.

Ring finger

The fourth finger of the left hand is the wedding and engagement finger in the UK.

Ellipse Ring from $535

Little finger

The traditional place for a signet, on the hand you don't write with.

Signet Ring from $815

Middle finger

The center of the hand, and the best place for a heavy statement or skull ring.

Large Skull Ring from $935

Thumb

Suits a wide band, such as the 13mm Liquid Wide Ring.

Liquid Wide Ring from $700

How many rings?

Start with one. If you add more, keep to one metal and leave a finger between two heavy rings.

Silver, gold or platinum?

The choice comes down to color, weight, wear and budget.

Silver

What most men choose: 86% of the men's rings we sell are sterling silver. It tarnishes slowly with wear and polishes back.

Gold

9ct (37.5% gold) or 18ct (75% gold), in yellow, white or rose. 18ct has the richer color and costs more.

Men's rose gold jewelry Men's gold jewelry →

Platinum

The hardest precious metal we use, about twice the weight of silver, and it does not tarnish.

Our guide to platinum Men's platinum jewelry →

Titanium

Light and hard. Some designs, including the Enamel Geo and London Oak rings, are made in titanium.

Men's ring questions

How do I find my ring size?

Measure a ring that fits the finger you want to wear the new one on, ideally one of a similar width, at the end of the day, and check it against our ring size guide. If you can, come to the shop at 210 Upper Street and we will measure you.

What is the average men's ring size in the UK?

S. Half the men's rings we make are between O and V. Signets, usually worn on the little finger, come out smaller: the middle size for the signets we make is about O 1/2.

Does a wide ring need a bigger size?

Usually, yes. A wide band fits tighter than a narrow one at the same size. If you are buying a wide ring and measured with a thin one, come in and try the width, or call us before you order.

How wide should a men's ring be?

Whatever suits your hand. 3 to 4mm is fine and sits well beside other rings, 5 to 6mm is the usual wedding band width, and 9mm or 13mm is a ring with presence. Our Liquid bands come in 4, 6, 9 and 13mm, Ellipse in 3, 4, 5 and 6mm, and Beaten in 9 and 13mm.

Which finger do men wear rings on?

Any. In the UK the fourth finger of the left hand is for wedding and engagement rings, the little finger is the traditional place for a signet, the middle finger suits a heavy ring, and a wide band can go on the thumb.

What is the best metal for a men's ring?

For everyday wear, sterling silver is what most men choose from us: 86% of the men's rings we sell. Platinum is the hardest and heaviest and does not tarnish. Gold comes in 9ct or 18ct, in yellow, white or rose.

Can a men's ring be resized or exchanged?

If the size is wrong, contact us. Pieces that are not a Custom Option can be exchanged for another size within their size range; our Guarantee page has the full terms. Ask us about resizing.

How long does a ring take to make?

Approximately four weeks from order. Rings in stock leave sooner. If you need a ring by a date, call +44 20 7359 4977 before you order.
